How Long Does Dog Training Take? The Honest Answer.
Updated: Sep 8
One of the most common questions I’m asked as a dog trainer is:
“How long will the training take?” “How many sessions do I need?” “How much will it cost to fix X, Y or Z?”
They’re completely understandable questions — you want clarity, predictability, and a sense of what the journey ahead might look like. But the honest answer is this:
There is no fixed number.
Every dog is different. Every home is different. Every lifestyle, every routine, every goal — all different.
So the idea that training can be neatly packaged into a guaranteed number of sessions simply isn’t realistic. And while that might feel frustrating at first, it’s actually good news… because it means your dog’s progress isn’t limited by a formula.
Small Hinges Move Big Doors
Here’s what is true:
Small hinges move big doors. Tiny changes in your daily routine, communication, structure or expectations can create huge shifts in your dog’s behaviour.
If you come to training with:
patience
motivation
openness to change
and a willingness to try something new
…you can unlock meaningful progress surprisingly quickly.
One session may not “fix” everything forever — but it can give you:
new tools
clearer communication
confidence
direction
and the next step forward
And that alone can change the entire trajectory of your training.
No Quick Fixes — But Plenty of Quick Wins
It’s absolutely true that there are no quick fixes in dog training. Behaviour change takes consistency, repetition and clarity.
But there are quick wins.
Many owners I work with are already doing lots of the right things — they’re just missing one piece of the puzzle. One small tweak. One clearer cue. One shift in timing. One change in structure.
And once that missing piece clicks into place? Everything starts to make sense — for both dog and human.
Sometimes the difference between struggle and success is simply understanding how to communicate what you’re asking.
Bootcamp Training: Skipping a Few Rungs
For some dogs and owners, bootcamp training can help skip a few rungs on the ladder. It’s not a shortcut — but it is a way to accelerate clarity, structure and confidence so you can continue progressing at home.
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed or unsure where to begin, this can be a powerful option.
You can ask me about bootcamp training anytime.
So… How Long Will It Take?
The truth is simple:
It takes as long as it takes — but progress often happens faster than you think.
With the right guidance, the right mindset and the right tweaks, you and your dog can make meaningful changes in a short space of time.
And I’m here to help you do exactly that.
